I've been interested in this series for a little bit, I enjoy certain dystopian series, and according to Netflix, Uglies is a a mix of Hunger Games and Divergent. I watched a YouTube video that talked about how the movie really didn't understand the actual meaning of the book, and it peaked my interest. If you want to watch the video, see here.
I have never read the actual Uglies books by Scott Westerfeld, but someone recommended I read them, and they've sat in my to-read in the Storygraph for a while. After I finish the book I'm reading now, American Royals, I might pick it up. I definitely want to read them eventually, especially since I love comparing books vs. movies. According to art by midnight's video, the movie changes a lot of little details, like most book-to-movie adaptations.
As of right now, I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was pretty good and at least seemed to portray the gist of the story. Uglies is about a girl named Tally, who lives in a dystopian, futuristic world where once you turn 16, you undergo a surgery that is supposed to make you pretty, and until then you are an ugly. She makes a new friend named Shay who doesn't want to have the surgery and wants to go to the Smoke...? I couldn't tell if the Smoke was supposed to be a place or what, I mean yes it's about how they're burning the flower thingies, and thus, smoke but that part was kinda confusing. Maybe that is just me. There's a dude named David who is the leader of the rebellion for a more natural world. That's basically the whole plot and the theme seems to be 'beauty is found on the inside!'
Uglies the movie was pretty good, but like i said before, I really want to read the book now, to see how accurate it is.
I did learn that the main actress in Hallmark's Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, Hunter King is the older sister to the main actress in Uglies, Joey King.
If you're wondering what else Joey King is in, she's in the Kissing Booth also by Netflix.
You should definitely watch Uglies and judge it for yourself! If you've read the books, comment whether it's similar or very different!
